Financial Controller / Finance Manager – Construction

Bamford Contract Services are recruiting on behalf of an established construction and building company based in Rochdale for an experienced Financial Controller / Finance Manager to join their team on a permanent basis.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Accounts Manager, Financial Controller, Finance Manager, Construction Accountant, Management Accountant or Senior Accounts professional looking for a varied role with responsibility across accounts, payroll, CIS, VAT, subcontractors, job costing and financial administration.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Managing Director and senior management team, taking ownership of the company's day-to-day financial processes while also providing PA and administrative support to the Managing Director.
You will be responsible for the company's day-to-day finance and accounts function, ensuring financial records are accurate, payments and invoices are processed correctly, and statutory requirements are met.
You will also provide administrative and commercial support to the Managing Director.
Finance & Accounts Responsibilities
- Day-to-day management of company accounts and financial administration.
- Bookkeeping using Sage Accounting.
- Processing purchase and sales invoices.
- Raising customer invoices and monitoring outstanding debts.
- Bank reconciliations.
- General ledger administration.
- Monitoring income and expenditure.
- Cash flow management and forecasting.
- Assisting with monthly management accounts.
- Preparing financial reports for management.
- Monitoring company cash position.
- Liaising with external accountants when required.
Payroll, CIS & HMRC
- Prepare and process monthly payroll.
- Manage PAYE requirements.
- Prepare and submit HMRC returns.
- Manage CIS (Construction Industry Scheme) administration.
- Verify subcontractors.
- Process subcontractor payments.
- Prepare and submit CIS returns.
- Maintain accurate employee and subcontractor records.
VAT
- Prepare and submit VAT returns.
- Maintain accurate VAT records.
- Monitor VAT liabilities and payment deadlines.
- Liaise with accountants and HMRC where required.
Construction Accounts & Job Costing
- Manage construction job costing and project financial records.
- Record labour, subcontractor, materials and other project costs.
- Monitor project costs against budgets.
- Check subcontractor invoices against agreed orders and costs.
- Identify cost variations and potential overspends.
- Assist with project profitability analysis.
- Allocate costs accurately across projects.
- Provide financial information to support commercial decision-making.
- Work closely with contracts and project management teams.
PA / Administrative Support to Managing Director
- Manage the Managing Director's diary and appointments.
- Organise meetings and appointments.
- Prepare reports, spreadsheets and financial information.
- Prepare correspondence and documentation.
- Take meeting notes and follow up actions.
- Liaise with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and professional advisers.
- Maintain confidential company information.
- Assist with general business administration.
- Provide administrative and commercial support to the Managing Director and senior management team.
About the Financial Controller / Finance Manager:
We are looking for an experienced finance professional who is confident managing a broad range of accounting and administration responsibilities.

Ideally, the successful Financial Controller / Finance Manager will have:
- Previous experience in accounts or finance.
- Experience within construction, building, plumbing, heating, engineering or a related industry is highly desirable.
- Strong experience using Sage Accounting.
- Experience with CIS and subcontractor payments.
- Experience processing VAT returns.
- Experience with PAYE and payroll.
- Knowledge of HMRC requirements.
- Experience with job costing and project accounts.
- Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong numerical and organisational skills.
- Good commercial awareness.
- The ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication skills.
- A professional and confidential approach.
- Confidence working directly with a Managing Director.
Construction Industry Experience
Candidates with experience in construction accounts, contractor accounts, subcontractor accounts, CIS, job costing, project accounting, building companies, plumbing companies or M&E businesses are particularly encouraged to apply.
Experience with Sage, CIS, VAT, PAYE, payroll, subcontractor payments, purchase ledger, sales ledger, cash flow forecasting and construction job costing would be highly advantageous.
