Pay: £14.82 per hour PAYE, rising to £15.15 per hour after 12 weeks
Hours: Tuesday to Friday, 6:30am start, with additional days as required

Bamford Contract Services are currently recruiting Refuse Truck Driver to work within Rochdale Council’s Waste Services team.

This is an excellent opportunity for experienced HGV Class 2 drivers looking for ongoing work, consistent hours and the opportunity to work for the local council.

Refuse Truck Driver Role:

You will be responsible for driving and operating a refuse collection vehicle as part of a waste collection crew, working alongside loaders to collect household and public waste across Rochdale.

Previous waste or refuse collection experience is desirable but not essential. However, driving and operating refuse collection vehicles requires a particular skill set, and the role will suit drivers who are confident, responsible and comfortable working in a busy, customer-facing environment.

As the Refuse Truck Driver, you will have responsibility for the route, vehicle and members of the collection crew, ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with relevant legislation and Council procedures.

Refuse Truck Driver Duties:

  • Safely drive and operate HGV refuse collection vehicles
  • Take responsibility for the vehicle, route and collection crew
  • Work as part of a three-person waste collection team
  • Collect household and public waste
  • Adhere to all relevant transport legislation and road safety requirements
  • Complete daily vehicle checks and report any defects
  • Complete driver defect reporting accurately
  • Maintain accurate manual records of driver hours where required
  • Use in-cab technology and vehicle systems effectively
  • Work alongside loaders to ensure collections are completed efficiently
  • Assist with loading duties when required
  • Maintain a professional and customer-focused approach when working in public areas
  • Ensure the vehicle and crew operate safely throughout the route
  • Provide a good standard of customer service as this is a customer-facing service
  • If you are required to work as a loader, you will still be paid the full driver's rate.

Refuse Truck Driver Requirements

  • HGV Class 2 / Category C licence
  • Valid and in-date Driver CPC
  • Previous HGV driving experience
  • Experience driving larger commercial vehicles
  • Waste/refuse collection experience is desirable but not essential
  • Good understanding of transport legislation and driver responsibilities
  • Confident completing vehicle checks and defect reports
  • Comfortable using in-cab technology
  • Minimum age of 21 for insurance purposes
  • Maximum of 6 penalty points
  • No DR10 or IN10 endorsements
  • Reliable, punctual and responsible
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team

Refuse Truck Driver Working Hours:

The core service operates Tuesday to Friday, with a 6:30am start.

Additional working days, including Mondays, weekends and bank holidays, may be required depending on the needs of the business.
